Experience

I have been tutoring for ten years, and have taught my own writing and literature courses and trained writing tutors for Cornell, as well. I have seen just about every type of writing assignment imaginable in that time. I have worked with both high school and college students and enjoy both. I love the challenge of figuring out what a teacher or professor is looking for with an assignment and how a student can meet those expectations with passion and flare. For all types of tutoring, I love working with students to figure out the best way to build on what they already know. I think really listening to students about how they're thinking and why is the key to good tutoring. I have taken a wide array of English classes and am familiar with many different types of literature. I can teach students how to read more carefully and deeply, with a focus on noticing interesting details. I am also experienced at helping students gain a greater understanding of the building blocks of good writing--how to build good sentence, and how to use those sentences to build good paragraphs and eventually great essays. I love discussing how to make an essay's thesis more thoughtful, communicative, and persuasive. As far as tests go: I got a perfect score on the verbal part of the SAT both times I took it (had to bring up my math!) and received a 760 on the verbal section of the GRE. I can complete these tests in nearly half the time given, as well, so if time is a concern, I can help you figure out how to get faster. I have figured out numerous strategies to help others improve, which I would love to share with you, taking into account your own strengths and weaknesses and learning preferences.
